Bernard did not show. Two teachers are absent, hence I have 2 hours in study hall. I finished reading: “Without Dough.” I hope I can go out this afternoon. I did actually go out. Bouzou lent me his bike and I decided to go see my friend Bernard whom I found at home. At least I think he is. We played “nain jaune” then we had a tea break (3 slices of bread spread with jam and some good tea). With his help I was able to find 12 cheeses (20 francs) and he gave me a piece of bread to take along. I got back to the Collége at 5:30, all sweaty after covering a good 28 km. I think I’ll go back on Sunday with Schiltz’s bike, spend the afternoon and get to know him better. I had a good time.
Friday 4.2
Today it was announced in the Official Bulletin [official government publication] that all young male persons between the age of 16 and 60 must join the STO. Lots of excitement. I checked out a German library book and read “The Outpost At The End Of The World.”
Saturday 5.2
Yesterday I got chewed out by Mr. Verbié. I made a mistake in the “equality case” and have to copy the 1st case 50 times. I did it.
